Hello!
It was great to meet you today and I think we got off to a great start. Today we introduced each other and had a look at the course syllabus. This week I'd like you to try out the blog: post a brief introduction of yourself and what your interests are in teaching ELA.
See you next week!

Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Kristina and this is the first time I have tried posting to a blog! I am very excited to learn with and from all of you this semester. I am in the LifeWork module of PDP and start my 405 semester in September. I hope to teach the intermediate grades and look forward to sharing ideas with all of you. I am very interested in the current trends in elementary language arts, especially surrounding reading.
See you all Tuesday!

Hi, sorry about the first posting.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, my name is Delicia and I have registered for the Elementary L.A. course because I believe it will help me instructing younger as well as older students how to read, write short stories, and poetry.

ReplyDeleteHi there my name is Lin, I'm in my last semester of PDP, and I'm taking this course for two reasons; one pressing, the other hopeful. My love is intermediate students grades 6/7 and doing all the fun stuff elementary allows you to do with them including, but not limited to, creative writing and read-aloud. My hope is that one day I will have the priviledge of teaching a class of 6/7's in the Lower Mainland.
The second reason I'm in this class, which is more pressing, is to gain insight into how to most effectively teach literacy in all its forms across the elementary grades. This will help me as I move to Southern Sudan in September to teach children of every age English, reading and writing. I hope to learn to see through seemingly chaotic variables to the big picture goals and priorities for students' Language Art's skills.
Hey everyone! My name is Jill and I'm in my second semester of PDP (January intake). I had a gr. 6 class during my 401/2 and it looks like I'll have a 7 or 6/7 in September. I'm looking forward to teaching- this is something I've wanted to do for ages!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping this course will give me some tools to teach students how to evaluate and assess texts (in all forms) rather than just regurgitate facts on a worksheet. Basically, I want to encourage higher-level thinking.
Hi all, Elisabeth here. I hope to teach primary (the kids are just so much cuter when they're younger) and am looking forward to a Kindergarten placement for 405 this fall. I've had some enjoyable (and challenging) placements at the 4/5 level but prefer the younger ones.
ReplyDeleteLiteracy is very important to me, I am particularly interested in learning how to effectively teach reading skills, and how writing and spelling fit into that. I have many questions!
After teaching in China, and talking with other teachers, I'm also more interested in applying these questions to ESL settings and learners.
Hello, my name is Kathryn ( hey Lin, nice to hear from a familiar face). This is my last semester at SFU, and also my last part of PDP. I did my short practicum in a grade 5 class, and my long practicum in a grade 6/7 class. I really enjoy teaching intermediate students and hope that one day I will be able teach this age group full-time.
ReplyDeleteThroughout my years of school I have always had a high interest in Language Arts which is why I chose to take this course. Also, although I believe that vocabularly and spelling skills are important, I would like to learn new and more engaging ways to teach them.
See you all next Tuesday :)
Hello Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI am currently in my last semester of PDP and am working on completing my BEd. as a second degree with a minor in Early Learning. During my 405 semester I was placed in a grade 6 and 7 classroom and absolutely loved it. However, I also love working with younger children and have experience volunteering and working in primary classrooms. I would teach anything from K-7. I am excited to learn more about ELA because it is such a large part of the curriculum, learning and development. I have learned and I believe that stories can be integrated into any lesson at any grade so I am excited that Sue will be addressing this further throughout the semester.
I hope that everyone has enjoyed their first week back. See you Tuesday.
Hi My name is Delicia and I have just completed my 405 long practicum. I registered for the Elementary L.A. course because I would like to learn new teaching methods and strategies to guide me when instructing Language Arts.

ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteI'm Sarah. I am in the Literacy in the Urban Classroom module of PDP and have just completed my short practicum with a gr.2/3 class. I majored in linguistics in my undergrad and I loved it! As such, I have a huge interest in working with the primary grades and helping kids learn how to read.
For this class, I am interested in learning about the various topics that can explored within Language Arts and how to implement the lessons into the classroom. I am looking forward to working and learning with everyone!
Hey Folks,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Mark. I am in the Seeds (Environmental Ed.) module and just completed the 401/402 semester. During the short practicum I was placed in a grade 6/7 classroom in Burnaby and will likely be returning to the same school in the Fall for my long practicum.
With regards to language arts, I am really interested in the application of place-based material in the classroom. Everything from local authors to local media. Looking forward to the class!

ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
My name is Jaclyn and I have just joined the course. I am in my final semester in PDP and I actually did my practicum at the secondary level as an English teacher. The reason I have enrolled in this class is because I am very passionate about literacy and LA and would like to know more about what it looks like at all levels as I would willingly teach any grade. What would be most practical for me at this point is to see what happens with students before they come to a grade 8 English class and how we can make that transition a smooth one. I would also love to work in a middle school and would therefore like to get some exposure to working with the grade 6/7 LA curriculum.
See you all next week!

ReplyDeleteHello Everyone,
My name is Mark, and I signed up for this class on Thursday, so I unfortunately missed our first class, but I am looking forward to meeting everyone next week, and beyond. I have just finished my 405 semester where I did my practicum in a grade 6 classroom in North Vancouver, which was amazing. One of the things I enjoyed about teaching language arts was the flexibility and potential for creativity. I am excited to take this course, and to learn valuable tools and strategies to help me teach language arts for all elementary grades. See you Tuesday.
Cheers,

I look forward to meeting everyone on Tuesday.
Hi Everyone!

Hey guys,
ReplyDeleteI'm Adam and I just finished my Education 401/402 with the Lifeworks module teaching grade 6/7 at the middle school level. I'm pretty pumped to be here and am hoping to learn as much as I can to help prepare me for Educ 405.
Im looking forward to getting to know everyone and am sure that we'll have an awesome semester together.

Hi All,
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I posted (commented) already, but can't find my first post and don't see some of the other posts that were there when I posted, so I've learned the hard way to make sure I keep a copy of my post in a Word Document!
I've completed 401/402 in the ITEM China (Xi'an) module (it was great!) and will do 405 in a Kindergarten class in Surrey, which I'm quite excited about as I prefer primary (the kids are just so cute when they're small).
I'm interested in Literacy, particularly how to effectively teach children to read, write and spell, and how those skills work together in the process of learning. I’ve recently become much more interested the ESL experience: how ESL/EAL students' learning process differs from students whose first language is English, and how that learning can be best supported.
I have many questions, and look forward to investigating a few of them this semester, along with you all!
:)

ReplyDeleteHey all,
My name is Sonja Pedersen and I am in my last semester of PDP. I completed my long practicum in April at Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith elementary in South-East Vancouver, where I had an ESL heavy grade 3/4 split class. I always thought that I would prefer primary, but after teaching grade 4s I have become very curious to teach intermediate now as well. I hold a B.A with a major in French and am very excited about August when I (we) will have a B.Ed as well. I have always been very passionate about reading and literature and it remains one of my favourite things to do and disucss with children. I love the thought of arranging my own classroom to be LA friendly and to create a very inviting environment for students to read and learn. I am looking forward to learning more ways to implement themes into all aspects of LA and beyond, as well as learning the best ways to organize LA centered units.
See you all tomorrow!

ReplyDeleteMy name is Veronica Gil. It is a privilage to be taking this class with all of you. Being part of PDP is something I feel very grateful and proud of. I was unable to attend last class, but I am looking forward to meeting you all tomorrow.
I just finished my 401/2 semester and completed my short-practicum in a grade 3 classroom at Roy Stibbs Elementary School, Coquitlam. My time at this school surpassed all my expectations and motivated me to continue this journey even more. I am also part of the Environmental Education module, in which I will have the opportunity to travel to Haida Gwaii this summer with all my classmates and practice experiential learning to its fullest!
In this class, I look forward to gaining a lot of knowledge on how to incorporate language arts into a my classrrom through engaging, educational and fun methods.
See you all soon,
Veronica G.

ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
My name is Mhari and I have just completed my 405 long practicum in a K/1 classroom, which was a fantastic experience. While I was there we looked at many great children's books and explored them through various ways. I had the assistance of my SA to choose appropriate and engaging ways of exploring the text and ideas. I am looking forward to gaining a better understanding of how to incorporate LA into the primary classroom and beyond. I also hope to gain some confidence in approaching the development of reading and writing for my future students.

“Hello! I'm looking forward to working with all of you this semester! I'm in my second semester of PDP and did my short practicum in a grade three classroom. The kids were great to work with and the experience was really eye opening! I have always known that I wanted to be an elementary teacher, it's just taken me a while to get here, and now that I'm here I'm sad that I'm almost out of school. Good luck and see y'all in class :)”
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteSorry this is so late, I had trouble setting up an account so I could post on the blog. My name is Liat Hassan. I did my 405 practicum in the spring in a kindergarten/ grade 1 split class and had a great learning experience. One area that I had difficulty with was creating a cohesive and well thought-out language arts program for my class. Thus, I am very excited for this class so I can learn how to better develop my program.
See everyone Tuesday,
Liat
